Why power supply sizing trips up so many builders
The single most common power-supply mistake we see in North American DIY builds is not buying a bad PSU — it is buying the wrong size one. People either copy a forum post that says "850W is safe for everything" and overspend, or they trust the sticker on a cheap no-name unit and discover it the hard way when the PC reboots mid-game. Neither instinct serves you. A power supply is a component you size to your actual load, with real headroom for the spikes modern GPUs throw at it.

How the tool works
Every component is assigned a realistic loaded wattage rather than a TDP marketing number. CPUs and GPUs scale by tier — an entry-level i3 draws a very different load than an i9-14900K under Cinebench — while RAM, SSDs, fans and USB devices are counted per unit. The overclocking option bumps CPU and GPU draw by 10–24% to reflect boost behavior and voltage headroom, because a "200W" GPU at stock can easily spike to 240W the moment you push the power-limit slider.
The recommended PSU is your system peak multiplied by 1.35, rounded up to the next common wattage step (550, 650, 750, 850, 1000W…). The 35% buffer is not arbitrary. Modern graphics cards pull transient spikes that last only milliseconds but can exceed twice their average draw, and aging capacitors slowly reduce what a PSU can actually deliver over its life. Headroom keeps you inside the PSU's efficient 50–80% load band and leaves room for a future GPU upgrade.
Step-by-step usage
- Pick your CPU tier. Match the closest label to your chip (Entry / Mainstream / High / Ultra).
- Pick your GPU tier. Be honest — an RTX 4070 is High, not Ultra.
- Count your sticks, drives, fans and USB devices. RGB controllers, AIO pumps and USB hubs all count and they add up.
- Set the overclocking load to Light if you run a mild OC, Heavy if you chase benchmarks.
- Read the System Peak, then the Recommended PSU. Cross-check the recommendation against the GPU vendor's stated PSU minimum — if the two disagree by a tier, pick the higher one.

Pro tips for DIY builders
- Trust 80+ Gold as the floor for a gaming rig. Bronze is fine for an office box; Platinum only pays back if your PC idles many hours a day.
- ATX 3.0 matters for RTX 40/50 cards. It handles 2× transient spikes natively and ships the 12VHPWR connector, so you avoid the adapters that caused melting incidents early in the 40-series launch.
- Never size a PSU to "exactly fit." A PSU running at 95% load is loud, hot, inefficient and one capacitor-aging year away from failing. Headroom is cheap insurance.
- Single rail vs multi rail: single rail is simpler and fine for almost all home builds. Multi-rail adds protection but can trip on big GPU transients if misconfigured.
When in doubt, size up one tier. The $20 you spend going from 750W to 850W is a lot cheaper than replacing a fried PSU — or the GPU it takes with it.
