Why 60 FPS can feel worse than 60 FPS
Gamers obsess over average FPS, but average FPS lies. A steady 16.6ms frame time feels buttery; a frame time bouncing between 10ms and 30ms feels stuttery even though both average 60 FPS. The single number that predicts smoothness is not FPS — it is frame-time consistency. How the tool works
The calculator does three things:
- FPS ↔ frame time conversion. Frame time (ms) = 1000 ÷ FPS. 60 FPS = 16.6ms, 144 FPS = 6.9ms, 240 FPS = 4.2ms. The lower the frame time, the tighter the feedback loop.
- Stutter detection. Enter your average FPS and your 1% low FPS. The tool computes the variance and flags stutter if the 1% low drops more than 30% below the average. A "100 FPS" game with 45 FPS 1% lows feels rough.
- Input-lag budget. Adds frame time, half-frame display processing, display response time, mouse polling interval, and USB/controller polling. The total is your end-to-end input lag. Below ~30ms most players cannot feel it; above 50ms it is obvious in fast shooters.
Step-by-step usage
- Enter your average FPS from a benchmark (CapFrameX, MSI Afterburner, NVIDIA Reflex stats).
- Enter your 1% low FPS from the same run. The bigger the gap, the more stutter.
- Enter your monitor's refresh rate and response time. Both add to input lag.
- Enter your mouse polling rate. 1000Hz adds 1ms; 125Hz adds 8ms.
- Read the stutter verdict and the input-lag total. The tool tells you whether the game will feel smooth and whether your input lag is competitive.
Common hardware problems this tool solves
- "60 FPS feels worse than 60 FPS" — frame-time variance. The 1% low is the giveaway; the average hides the stutter.
- "My aim feels off in fast shooters" — input lag. Total above 50ms is the culprit; the tool names which component (refresh, response, polling) is the biggest contributor.
- "Should I cap my FPS, and where?" — cap a few FPS below your monitor's refresh to keep G-Sync/FreeSync in range. The tool confirms the math.

Pro tips for competitive players
- Frame-time consistency beats peak FPS. A steady 120 FPS feels smoother than a bouncing 144 FPS. Cap your FPS to stabilize frame time.
- 1% lows are the real smoothness metric. Aim for 1% lows within 30% of your average. Bigger gaps feel stuttery.
- Input lag adds up — every component matters. Frame time + display response + polling + USB. Cutting 5ms at each of four points is more impactful than cutting 20ms at one.
- Enable NVIDIA Reflex or AMD Anti-Lag. These cut the render queue latency, often by 10–30ms. Free smoothness.
- Cap FPS 3 below your refresh rate with VRR on. Keeps G-Sync/FreeSync in range and avoids the tear-prone top edge. Use the in-game limiter or RTSS for the smoothest result.
