The handheld PC problem nobody explains
Handheld PCs and thin laptops advertise the same chip names as desktops but deliver very different performance. A "mobile RTX 4070" running at 100W is roughly half the speed of a desktop 4070 at 200W. A Steam Deck OLED and an ROG Ally X have completely different trade-offs — one wins battery, the other wins peak FPS. The spec sheets do not tell you any of this.

How the tool works
Each chip carries four scores:
- Performance — normalized FPS in a basket of AAA games at the chip's typical TDP.
- Wattage — typical sustained TDP. Lower is better for battery; higher is better for peak FPS.
- Perf-per-watt — efficiency. The single most important number for handhelds, because it dictates both FPS and battery life.
- Battery estimate — estimated hours of play at typical TDP and screen brightness, assuming a 50–80Wh battery.
Filter by form factor (handheld vs thin laptop), sort by any column, hover for spec — cores, GPU model, TDP range, memory bandwidth, display output.
Step-by-step usage
- Decide what you value more: peak FPS or battery life. This is the core handheld trade-off.
- Filter by form factor if you are committed to a handheld or a thin laptop.
- Sort by Perf-per-watt for the most balanced chips, by Performance for peak FPS, or by Battery estimate for endurance.
- Compare your top 2–3 side by side. Look at where each wins — peak, efficiency, battery.
- Check the TDP range. A chip that scales from 5W to 30W is more flexible than one locked at 25W.
Common hardware problems this tool solves
- "My handheld gets loud and hot after 10 minutes" — default TDP is set high for benchmark headlines. Cap TDP and frame rate to match your screen, using the FPS & Latency Stutter Calculator to pick a cap.
- "Battery dies in 90 minutes of gaming" — you are running at peak TDP on a hot chip. Lowering TDP from 25W to 15W might cost 25% FPS but double battery life.
- "My thin-laptop RTX 4070 is half the speed of my friend's desktop 4070" — same name, very different power. The compare tool makes the gap explicit.

Pro tips for handheld buyers
- TDP scaling is sub-linear. Dropping from 25W to 15W might cost 25% FPS but cut power in half. Great for travel; minimal experience loss on a 7" screen.
- Cap your frame rate to your screen. A 120Hz handheld running at 60 FPS wastes battery. Cap to 60 (or 45 for endurance) and the chip downclocks to match.
- Same-name laptop chips are not desktop chips. A "mobile RTX 4070" runs ~100W vs 200W desktop and delivers roughly half the sustained FPS. Adjust expectations.
- Sustained FPS beats burst FPS on handhelds. A chip that holds 45 FPS for an hour beats one that hits 60 for 5 minutes and throttles to 35.
- Battery size matters as much as chip efficiency. A 80Wh battery with a mid chip often outlasts a 50Wh battery with an efficient chip. Check both.
